That’s a really good question. I don’t even see such an option on the page (screenshot below). I don’t think I’m even aware of it. Where might I find that?
It’s set to Automatic. Unless you’re making sweeping changes to your databases often, it shouldn’t be hammering your NAS. Where are you seeing that it is?
Ah, so “Synchronize” is “Sync Interval”. Gotcha.
I kept hearing the NAS churning constantly all night and after quite a bit of unsuccessful digging, I happened to discover that it does that only when DEVONthink is running on my iMac. I suppose it could be the web server instead? Maybe that’s always writing logs? I don’t know how to troubleshoot specifically what DT is doing, but I know DT is the one hammering the drives.
Ah, so “Synchronize” is “Sync Interval”. Gotcha.
Yep.
Why is websharing running all night?
The web server runs when DT runs. If I don’t remember to close DT every night and re-open it every morning, then I can’t access it from anywhere I am over the web. It’s easier to leave it running.
My Synology NAS seems to be busy much of the time also. Without DEVONthink running. I have not been successful in finding out why. I inspect the running processes but so far I have not made it a priority to resolve.
I suspect what you see is not DEVONthink.
Devonthink on desktop + Devonthink to go iOs + Dropbox is for me the perfect combination for years to have all my documents with me without any problems when I’m ‘on the move’
No, I’m certain it’s DT. It literally runs almost constantly. When I close DT, it stops. It’s definitely DT.
Perhaps do a verify on the sync store? Maybe clean it and start fresh?
Is Synology Drive running and doing anything with DEVONthink stuff?
No, I don’t use Synology Drive at all, though I do sometimes think about trying it.
I might as well keep wearing my ignorance on my sleeve: what does it mean to “do a verify on the sync store”? Do you mean using the Synology NAS storage disk checking? Is there something in DT of which I’m unaware to do that?
Looks to me like a good chunk of the activity, the following taken from the Synology log center, is just DT doing its WebDAV thing every few seconds. I’m not sure why, when I’m not even using the iMac where it’s running, but maybe somebody else knows:
Not at my computer to check. See the DEVONthink Manual Trouble Shooting section. From the dialog box you show above.
By chance is the DEVONthink database package on the NAS? (wild guess)
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I wasn’t aware of how to do it. For others who might join the thread, the information is on page 184 of the DEVONthink 3.9.8 documentation (today anyway), and the general steps are:
- Bring up the program options (Cmd + ,) and go to the “Sync” page.
- Option + right click the location you use for sync and choose the option to verify thoroughly.
For what it’s worth, that ran successfully with no complaints. And as to the database package, no, those are all on the local hard drive of my iMac.
I would think DEVONthink only needs to communicate with the NAS when there is anything to sync. Do you have DEVONthink run any automatic/scheduled tasks? Like RSS feeds updating constantly, smart rules, etc. Any indexed files that could be changing often?
For verifying sync stores, see Troubleshooting > Sync Issues > Verify & Clean in the manual. Perhaps also Settings > Sync > Locations/Databases and in the manual. (…Oh, I see you found it)
For good measure: could you answer @rmschne’s question about the location of the databases?
I would think that too, which is why I find so much traffic puzzling. To my knowledge, I have no RSS feeds and no scheduled tasks. And I believe I did answer the question about database location, but if not I’ll try again: all my databases are on the local hard drive of my iMac: none of them are stored on and opened from the NAS.
Sorry! You absolutely did, I don’t know how I missed that.
That’s definitely sync data.
Set the sync interval to Manual and see if things quiet down overnight. Logically, it should.
I am not particularly tech-savvy, but I have had not problems syncing from my MacBook to my iPad using Bonjour. I often need to refer to documents in my DT database when traveling and the DT to DTTG on my iPad via Bonjour has reliably served me well.
