Well said - I’m definitely in the “no generative AI” camp, but I’m not going to request those features (or stubs for accounts) be removed from DEVONthink 4 – the developers are doing a heap of good work as it is without adding that load of parallel code bases or additional complexity.

I feel like Ai is like PDF editing in DEVONthink. it won’t go anywhere it will just be convenience to have.

if you want the full Ai experience, you will have to have an Ai exclusive app for it

So I was rather indifferent in the beginning about the new “chat AI” integration.

But with time, I have found myself using it more and more.

Most of the time, my use case is the following:

  • I’m reading a pdf, it has an interesting bit of information. I ask the chat to make a document out of the selected text. I also might ask to adjust the format or add some information. This is so much better and faster compared to myself creating a new document by either typing it or copying it.

My only wish is that the newly generated document would include some “link” to the source — but I have solved this for myself by:

  1. Creating a custom metadata field “source document”
  2. Pasting there source with link.

So I’d say I’m very glad that the Devonthink team has integrated those features!

Technically this should be possible but you usually have to explicitly request this in your prompt.
