Do you use any third-party extensions, e.g. input managers, spell checkers or other typing aids? Then please disable them. Or is anything logged to the system console (see /Applications/Utilities/Console.app) related to the application (I’m actually not sure if you’re talking about DEVONagent or DEVONthink)?
You mentioned that you have anti-virus software installed. The Apple support forums are full of reports of problems caused by Norton’s software, and some versions of Virex software. At one time, Apple provided free anti-virus software to .Mac subscribers. The forum “gurus” generally recommend that every last vestige of those applications should be removed.
There’s a free Mac application that finds and removes Windows-originated viruses from MS Office documents, and is reported not to cause problems.
I don’t run anti-virus software, on the theory that there really are not any Mac viruses in the wild at this time. If a new one shows up, it probably wouldn’t be in the anti-virus software database, anyway. I do run in stealth mode behind a firewall, and I don’t open attachments from unknown sources.
As to my Windows-MS Office-using friends, if I forward to them a virus-infected file, I needn’t worry about them, as they all have to use anti-virus software, for very good reasons.
Try starting up from your Installation DVD and hold down the C key while booting up.
You will find a menu option to run Disk Utilities > Disk Repair. Run Disk Repair on your boot drive. With luck, you may find an error that can be corrected and get your computer operating again. If an error is reported and fixed, run Disk Repair again, until no error is reported (I hope). Then try restarting normally.
It’s obviously something deeper than any problem with DEVONagent itself.
Although this won’t help with your morning schedule, if Disk Repair can’t get you running, it might be time to do a hardware check. Restart again with the Installation DVD in the optical drive, holding down the Option key at the chime until you have the option of choosing Apples Hardware Test routine. Run that to see if any hardware error is reported, such as a hard drive problem.
