Can anyone recommend me an external editor for Devonthink?

Is it unreasonable to pay for a helpful service?

Yes.

You shouldn’t be forced to pay just to get your data out!

There are lots of people who cannot pay for technical or socio-economic reasons or simply have no money too, don’t forget that.

They can afford a computer and/or phone but not to pay for Drafts?

Even if so - that’s not a software company’s problem to solve.

Though I don’t use Drafts because I don’t like their silo approach: they have to live on something. If you want your data outside of it (comfortably, that is – copy/paste works for free), then pay for it. Or don’t use the product in the first place. There are lots of free (as in beer and as in freedom) editors out there – vi, Emacs, Cot Editor, VS Studio, to name but a few. Whining about the licensing decisions of developers is pointless, imo.

Yes, that may very well be the case!

And of course it is, as they produced the problem…

It is not clear from the beginning, that you can’t get out your texts in a usable format later!
And this is on purpose, which makes this very well a problem of the developer!

You paid nothing.

You got more than you paid for.

You have no basis to complain about anything if you are not a paying customer.

Again, getting out your stuff should NOT cost.
You seem to disagree, but that does not change my stance to this.

Did they ever suggest otherwise to you?

Frankly their approach seems to me to be an excellent business practice.

You can use the software as much as you want - presumably with test data or duplicate data - before you decide if it is useful to you. That is free.

But before you can use the premiere feature of the software - its ability to effortlessly send your data anywhere else - you need to pay.

It’s hard for me to think of a better business model for a trial. And they never suggested that their policy is any different.

As I said, it was absolutely NOT clear that it would be a pain to get your data out.
And that is not Ok in my book!

Fell free to stay at your point of view … and leave me and mine alone!

Okay, everyone. The thread has run its course. Let’s all shake hands and be friends
