I have three types of PDF: the ones that open with the internal app viewer, that can be annotated and others that open with Mac Preview. And those that can be opened with the internal viewer, some can be annotated, others not, all are text compatible and can be annotated from outside with Preview.
I really wonder what could be the difference, because some shows as “PDF”, others as “PDF+text”. Some are indexed, others are inside app.
But that is not my problem. My problem is once I’ve open a PDF with MAC preview, and annotate it, it cannot be saved back to DT, it only can be saved externally. As before, does not matter if the PDF is indexed or is inside the app, or is PDF or PDF+text. And then I must index/import it.
You’re either running DEVONthink Personal or have them in the Global Inbox. This is an Apple problem, not a DEVONtech one. Preview sees the file lives in the App Support folder and disallows editing of the file.
No, I’m using DEVONthink Pro Office, purchased, and using it in a database but indexed with the original file stored in iCloud Drive (The PDF, not the database, that is at HOME folder).
And as said, both indexed and imported have the same problem.
Perhaps a completely clean install should resolve this. I installed evaluation version of DT Personal, then Pro and at the end I went with the Office version because the OCR possibility.
How can I completely remove all traces of DT and start over?
While my MBP creates the account (iCloud Slow Stuff even with a 250MB Fiber Symmetric), the thing is even weirder. I’ve open my iMAC, went to the same file, and it open with the internal DT viewer, not annotable, and says “PDF+text” while in the MBP says “PDF” only (same file as it is in iCloud Drive)… Other side PDF of same folder, says “PDF” opens with MAC Preview, and same not save behavior.
Exactly same behavior with a new account. Now both PDF are local to the test database, they open in internal viewer but cannot be edited (see attachment).
In my last case files were local to the test database, but the iCloud files are in a iCloud folder, and I selected Index and then selected the folder.
Files are… oooops, cannot annotate outside of DEVONthink… Just tested opening them from Finder and Preview complains as well… Permissions are ok, not locked… Mmmmmm…
Ok, sorry for the inconvenience, problem comes from iCloud Drive itself…
At the end seems a bug in MAC Preview for macOS 10.12.6, at least in Spanish, that any PDF cannot be saved once annotated, does not matter if it is in iCloud Drive or local.
As I have PDF Expert for MAC, I’ve changed the default application to that and now works perfect and can edit any PDF does not matter if it is indexed or internally stored. Closing PDF Expert automagically updates the file.
As summary, I’m very happy with this program (DEVONthink, not PDF Expert, just to clarify). I think finally found the tool I was looking for!!!
