I have over a dozen databases but I don’t need all of them open at all times. Once I have them synced through iCloud would there be any problem in closing the ones not needed and then opening them when needed. Would it cause problems keeping them open in DTTG?

No issue at all with closing unused databases. In fact, it can free up machine resources to do so. And no, there’s no ill effect having them open in DEVONthink To Go, especially as you can’t close them.
