I cannot find a way to convert a text document into a Markdown document and believe this feature does not exist.
It would be great to add converting a file to Markdown to the context menu.

Just add .md to the end of the filename and it should be detected as Markdown.

However, this is a rather hidden feature. I still think it would be nice to be able to have the menu provide a convert method for each supported file type.
