"Creating" documents in smart groups

Is it a bad idea to think that, for example, a new RTF document should appear in a smart group if it was “created” there?

I have 5 smart groups for documents with ratings. One star, two stars, etc.

If the content of the smart group “one star” is visible and I type the shortcut ⌘+⌃+n, then a new RTF document is created at the top level. That’s good. Couldn’t it also automatically take on the properties of the smart group and be displayed there?

That’s not possible. Smart groups are just kind of saved searches and not valid destinations, meaning that documents are not created in smart groups. And in most cases the conditions couldn’t even be translated to properties (e.g. conditions matching text or read-only attributes or conditions matching multiple attributes of the same kind, e.g. multiple labels or ratings).

Yes, I understand all that, but … :slightly_smiling_face:

Another example: Is it unthinkable that when I drag a document to a smart group, it takes on the properties of this saved search?

Thinkable for sure but in the end that’s exactly the job of smart rules, e.g. dropping an item onto a smart rule performs the actions of the rule.

Ah, of course. I’ll take a look at that. Thanks!

But what’s more important for me is that a document appears in a smart group when I “create” it there. That’s a bit of a silly automation, but it works :slightly_smiling_face:

There is no “there” with a smart group. Du zäumst das Pferd von Schwanz her auf.

Imagine you have a smart group selecting all PDFs that have no text layer. Now you drop a PDF with text layer on it – should it be removed?
Or a smart group for all replicates – should it create a replicant when you drop a document in it? If so – where?
Or one that selects images, and you drop a text document in it…

There are gazillions of possibilities to define the conditions for a smart group. Applying them to a document that is dropped in the group just does not make sense.
