Customizing dark mode in markdown preview CSS?

I feel like I should be able to figure this out myself, but in case someone else has already done so—is there a way to play with dark mode colours in Markdown previews? I can’t seem to get the preview to pick up on CSS variables, though I’m not that proficient in CSS so I may just be messing something up. (I did get this to work on my website, though.)
