Databases stored on my internal SSD backed up in iCloud. Is that OK?

I have done multiple searches on the topic…and I am getting confused. I remember back in 2017 or so being told that I should NOT put my databases on iCloud.

Not being overly technical - I am confused - I have my database on my MacBook Air SSD. And iCloud, backs them up.

Is that ok?

I do not need to sync anything. I do not use any Devonthink products on my iPhone. I only use DT· on my Macbook Air.

I have not had any problems - just want to make sure I am ok moving forward.

Thanks,

Ryan

I have my database on my MacBook Air SSD.

  • Are you referring to the internal drive?

  • What folder(s) are the databases stored in?

Please provide more details on “iCloud backs them up”
iCloud is a data storage location, not a backup process

Thanks. Yes, on my internal SSD. On my home folder (or user?) I have a folder called Databases-DTPO.

This a newly bought used computer. My last one had my name ryannagy as the drive name. This one says “Apple” for some reason.

Sorry for my ignorance, I do not know. I pay a certain amount for ICloud back up. I was under the impression that my files are on my computer but also periodically uploaded to the cloud. I used to have a Mac with a 500g SSD backed up externally, but for the moment, I only have a 128 internal SSD and thought to turn on iCloud storage for that folder.

  1. Your home directory / user account is apple on this mac.

  2. That DPTO-Databases folder is not in iCloud, nor is it being “backed up to iCloud”. iCloud has no such process for your home directory. It can handle the Desktop and Documents folders, though that’s not something we recommend enabling.

  3. You should get an external hard drive connected and use Time Machine at a minimum to do a proper backup, assuming your data is important to you.
An online backup is also possible, if desired. Arq is commonly used by our userbase and company president.

Good lord, sorry. I can see now that my iCloud drive is in a separate location and nothing on my user account is backed up. I do have Time Machine enabled, but thought it was in addition to iCloud.

Again, sorry and thanks for the clarification. Moving to a new laptop after my last one died confused me.

No worries at all!
Apple doesn’t make things about iCloud Drive very clear and also forces the user to opt-out instead of opt-in :rage: when setting up a Mac.

I’m glad you have at least Time Machine running.
