There is a “retain view” option in preferences. But it would be nice to set a default view that would be inherited by subfolders. Is it there and I missed it?

If you are viewing groups in Three Pane view, the subfolders inherit the same columns as the parent group.
If you double-click a group to open it in its own window, it can have its own set of columns.
