Is it possible to delete database inboxes? With the global inbox and several databases, that’s WAY too many inboxes. I’d prefer to have just one inbox, the global inbox, and have that many fewer things to check.

No. they are part of the core elements of a database.
PS: You can rename them to help keep them sorted out visually.

Renaming doesn’t help with the “too many inboxes to check” problem, alas.
I see that DevonThink permits locking groups. Will that prevent items from being added to the inbox group? Thanks!
Perhaps I’m overlooking something, but if you are not creating/saving anything to the database inboxes, there is no reason to check them?

No. If you’re using Preferences > Import > Destination: Select Group, you would have the choice of where to file items. Or use the Sorter.
