Deleting items from Smart Groups

If I use a smart group to search for specific key words am I able to delete smart group folder contents without deleting the original item?

For example if I set a smart group using cars as the keyword and it brings back 100 items. I then review the 100, deciding only 10 are relevant to what I am researching or writing about so decide to delete 90 from the smart group. Will the deleted items only be removed from the smart group or will the original items also be deleted?

Smart groups are nothing more than a saved search-the smart ‘group’ doesn’t actually contain the documents. In other words, if you delete items from a smart group, you have deleted the documents from your database. You could assign a temporary tag to the 90 documents, then revise your smart group to exclude the temporary tag.
