DEVONthink To Go 4.1 Lagrange

DEVONthink To Go 4.1 Lagrange*, the first feature release of the fourth generation of our mobile app, introduces widgets, support for RSS and Atom feeds, and a brand-new Markdown parser and renderer. Have your inboxes, recently viewed documents, favorites, and your reading list always in reach with widgets on your home screen. Read your news and favorite blogs on the go. Feeds are updated automatically, if desired, even in the background. Choose the best article format on a per-feed basis if needed. And yes, there’s a widget for unread feed articles too.

Our new Markdown renderer replaces MultiMarkdown 6 and delivers more reliable previews and broader syntax support. It combines the most popular features of MultiMarkdown, CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, and more.

Version 4.1 also supports BibTeX documents, merges multiple images, including TIFFs, into a single PDF document, and let’s you open text documents and PDFs directly in editing mode, saving you an extra tap every time you want to make changes. We’ve revisited the group selector, too, which now sports a search field and keyboard navigation. If you’re relying on the geolocation saved with each document you can now open a geolocation in Apple and Google Maps or edit it if it’s incorrect.

Of course, we’ve also improved the overall reliability and performance, and fixed bugs and glitches.

You can find a complete list of all improvements in Settings > Help > Read Me inside the app. The New & Improved page also highlights what’s new in each feature release. We recommend this update to all users of DEVONthink To Go. The App Store will either install the update automatically for you or you can find it in the Updates area of the App Store app. If you are still using an older generation of DEVONthink To Go, version 4 is a new app and you’ll need to install it manually. DEVONthink To Go 4 is included with every license for DEVONthink 4 Pro or Server for Mac as long as it receives updates.

*) We’re naming this release after the mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736–1813) who made significant contributions to the fields of analysis, number theory, and both classical and celestial mechanics. Lagrange’s work has had a profound impact on our understanding of celestial mechanics and has practical applications in space exploration. His solution to a special form of the three-body problem, the Lagrangian points, represent the perfect balance of the gravitational forces of two stellar bodies.

What a surprise! This seems like a major achievement; congratulations to the team! (A standalone RSS reader is one thing, but integrating the functionality in an app as complex as DTTG on iOS is, I imagine, something quite different.)
I knew it was on the list, but I thought it was much further away… I might finally be motivated to upgrade to iOS 26.

I’m also excited to see the new markdown renderer in action. (And I’m quite intrigued to find out what it means for macOS, where markdown things have been hinted at…)

Absolutely love the naming of this release! You should publish a poll so we “math nerds" can influence the names of future releases

Well, this time the name has actually three subtle meanings in one, from pure mathematics to current events and beyond

What about an Emily Noether version, giving a genaue female mathematician some credit.

A great choice but, unfortunately, only loose ties into astronomy and space exploration :man_shrugging:t2:

She explained the mathematics behind conservation of energy and other physical conservation laws. Useful in space exploration  I vote for Noether also. Note the connection to Lagrangians! Noether's theorem - Wikipedia

And I was thinking of Algebra… Well, my university time was over 40 years ago.

Yes, that is another subject that she made fundamental contributions to. She was a spectacular talent.

Regarding the Widgets: - Is that only on the iPad. I can’t seem to find any Devonthink widgets on the iPhone after upgrading the app.

Just to clarify: my proposal was for a future release, not the Lagrange one.

There’s even a VERY ephemerally connected theme song to go along with the new version:
ZZ Top - La Grange

By the way, if there is a localized Italian version it should be called Lagrangia :winking_face_with_tongue:

I know

Yes, they are also available on the iPhone.

Happy Friday to us! A lot of people in the forum are about to lose their minds over a new markdown editor :joy: I look forward to the inevitable post when someone discovers their markdown syntax used by only 10 people in the world isn’t supported  (I tease! Great work guys!)

I have no vote for the next release name as long as you keep using French scientists :france:

Sorry for being dim about this. I have Version 4.1 (18123). If I go into the home screen on the iphone tap > edit home screen…the tap add Widget….there is no Devonthink widget listed ? Where did you get that screen you have posted above ??

I love the name by the way.

Have you tried turning the phone off and on again? I know it’s a cliche, but I’ve had trouble with adding widgets on iPhone since Apple introduced them and that nearly always fixes the issue. For some reason it doesn’t always detect when apps have added the functionality.

Well this might end up being depressing to see every day :grimacing:
