I am using Firefox for 99 percent of my browsing and I’ve never seen any of these effects. Maybe some add-on that breaks things here?
I think that’s right. I have tried disabling uBlock Origin, Little Snitch and some of the other add-ons but nothing makes any difference. The text window works in Safari but nothing else.
It may be a script that’s failing to work for some reason, but if the page loads then the script should load with it. I don’t have an add-on that specifically targets scripts so it could be anything. Same thing happens with Vivaldi which is Chromium based.
Since Ublock Origin is now available for Safari albeit in a ‘Lite” version, I don’t have any major problem with using Safari as my default browser
Hey Firebell, have you tried disabling the “Enhanced Tracking Protection” in Firefox?
It isn’t perfect, and I sometimes need to disable it for trusted sites.
It’s accessible by clicking the shield icon to the left of the url in the address bar (it has a tick in my image below).

Thanks for the tip @m-j-r, but it made no difference. I also cleared the cache to remove any existing data
Found the cause of the text entry problem on this site. With Firefox I use “Zoom Page WE” an extension which does what it says. For reasons I could never master, this works better that the standard Firefox page Zoom settings, but locks up the text window on this site. I also use this extension with Vivaldi and have the same problem there.
Disable the extension and it becomes possible to enter text in the pop up window. However it does reduce the visible text size. If I set this to (say) 133% in Firefox settings it doesn’t stick and I have to reset it each time I open Firefox. Easier to use the extension, although that sometimes brings its own problems such as taking up excessive memory and slowing Firefox down if I have a number of tabs open.
It is getting easier to use Safari which nowadays works with most sites without problems.
You could take a look at the console in Firefox’ developer tools to see if it displays any hints on what might stop the text box to work.
