DT3 auto group/auto classify?

And as I replied to you at that time:

The last thing I want to do now is open old wounds so to say but if we had gotten the “word”, then much of the upset could’ve been avoided…oh well. As I also said “all’s well that ends well.”

This was actually a recent decision (last week)

Christian… What I meant by “word” was an indication that the re-inclusion was even being considered, not the final decision. But anyway, like I said, the last thing I want to do at this point is rehash old issues. I’m extremely pleased with the decision and I look forward to moving ahead with the new version and more constructive discussions!

I should also say that the feature works very well as a “parallel” option to the normal Group feature and interesting that it activates on shift click which reinforces that notion. The only thing I’m wondering about is the decision to limit it to pro users and up. As a long time pro user it’s not an issue for me but I was just curious.

Thanks so much for returning this functionality. I really appreciate it.

Hi,
is there any consideration to return this feature into the base package as it was back in DT2?
I immediately purchased non-PRO DT3 license back when it came out in Beta, now thanks to this discussion the group/auto classify comes back (which I also intensively used in DT2) but to pay 99 USD for the upgrade just to use this feature seems a steep curve. Devonthink praises AI but takes it very unique feature set out it and then returns it back into a more expensive upgrade feels wrong to me.

There are no plans to change the editions of version 3.

Where can I find the feature? It seems to be super hidden. Thank you guys

Select items, hold the Shift key, and choose Data > Group Similar Items, as noted in the Help > Documentation > Menus > The Data Menu > Group & Ungroup

This doesn’t seem to work over here. I’ve selected some duplicated records in the database’s root and pressed but neither in the Data menu nor in the context menu Group changed to Group Similar Items. I’m using DEVONthink 3.5.2 Pro. Am I missing something?

The Shift key is required.

Not working for me either (with the Shift key). It would really help to clear my inbox. Guess that disappointment is the reason for removing the original classify functionality.

Which edition do you use?

Sorry, I did’t see your message till now: 3.5.2

And the edition (Trial, Standard, Pro, Server)?

hei @cgrunenberg i am testing this feature.
When i select a PDF file located in the inbox of a DB, with shift key pressed, the “Group Similar Items” appears in the menu but is greyed out.

I am on DT 3.6.1. PRO. Thanks for your help.

That requires a selection of more than one item.

Thanks for clarifying.

  1. Group similar items: When selecting 2 files i am getting a “beep” but no action is taking place, also no logging.

  2. Classify: When I select “classify”, I am getting something along the lines of “Not classified”.

I assume this means that DT3 does not “know” (yet) where to put the file into? I have tried 10-15 various files in Inbox and all of them are getting same error code. My expectation was the DT would try to identify the appropriate group for a file here? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

  1. DEVONthink will only group items it thinks are related.
  2. It’s not an error code. It’s merely stating DEVONthink doesn’t have a reliable location to file the item(s) to.

Really quite shocked this functionality has been dropped.

I’ve just had to pay to upgrade to DT3 as DT2 has stopped working properly with scanners in the latest version of OSX.

For me, this was the only unique feature for devonthink and the singular reason to use the product. Can it please be re-instated.
