The temporarily required disk space depends on the size of the database, the contents of the database (e.g. kind, number of items etc.) and the used settings & sync locations. E.g. Bonjour requires less temporary disk space as sync stores. But in case of very large databases and little disk space left on the iPad the best option is probably to split the database.
