Is there a way, using Import > files and folders to have DTPO check for duplicates and ask (or be told beforehand via preferences) if these should be automatically converted to replicants during the import?
Maybe my usage is atypical, but this would be handy for me even if it slowed the import process down.
No, this is not possible (nor preferential).
Why don’t you just use the Duplicates Smart group to monitor duplicates ? You could potentially use the Data > Dupes to Replicants script as well.
Actually, that is what I’ve been doing. Is speed the reason why prompting me is not desirable?
Also, a question about using the script to convert duplicates. How is the actual file pointed to by the replicant (link) get chosen if I select all duplicates and run the conversion script? Is it by the order of the files as they get processed?

No. It’s just not an option. Importing files isn’t doing a check on the data already present in a database. It also would likely be much less performant if it was, especially with the size of databases some people have.
The first added file of the duplicates will be preserved. The later added duplicates will be replicated in their current locations and the dupes deleted.
