I love the sync between DTPO and DTTG and the continual improvement that seems to be occurring.
I tend to find I prefer highlighting/annotating pdfs on my ipad. I also prefer to use iannotate than the iin-built DTTG tools.
I found a workflow Workflow that says it will extract annotations from PDF Expert, but I need to replace the UUID in the Workflow with the UUID of the group I want to use in my DTTG. I understand that the UUID is the unique address of the group or document. But how do I find out what the UUID number actually is?
Also, I wonder if there is any similar way to do this with iannotate? I have PDF Expert and so can use it, but I find it is much slower downloading from Dropbox.
PDF Expert has the ability to export a copy of annotations. Each annotation is prefixed by the type of annotation e.g. highlight or note. The annotations are exported as an HTML file."
I just tried this out. PDF Expert on the mac offers the export of annotations to markdown as well at HTML and text, so this makes things even easier.
Well, it seems I took a wrong turn following kseggleton’s directions. I initially assumed that he meant PDF Expert on iPad, but I couldn’t find a way to export the annotations. I tried various avenues without success, so I assumed the directions pertained to PDFE on the mac.
I finally found the proper commands - in PDFE on iPad, open the pdf file, tap the “…” in upper right, and choose “Save a copy” (this was my error, I assumed this just copied the PDF file to another location - I was trying to use Share and Print in error). After this misstep, I was back on track. Got to Workflow and later found the annotations in the DT global inbox.
Thanks for your “system”, it’s exactly what I was searching for!
For me, PDF Expert and any other app that doesn’t support Document Picker doesn’t work.
That is, it cannot access files provided by other apps like DTTG. Instead, you have to use whatever storage option the app supports. Since all my documents are at least indexed, if not imported in DT, having to copy files from and to different storage providers doesn’t make too much sense.
PDF Expert does support the Document Picker. In PDF Expert tap on iCloud and then the ‘iCloud Drive’ icon in the top left. This will open the Document Picker and you can edit a DTTG document. All edits are saved in DTTG
Doesn’t seem to work for me. You are right, I can browse DTTG’s documents (my bad).
Although, PDF Expert seems to download the file. And it immediately uploads it to iCloud folder. Changes (in my test case, highlights) are not visible in DTTG (nor in DTPO on my desktop).
Does that work for you? I’d be curious to unterstand why it would … Are you using the DTTG’s sync feature? I sync DTTG and DTPO against the same sync store, a box.com account.
Yes it does work for me. All my highlights and annotations are saved in DTTG. I am syncing via a local sync. There are 2 iCloud Drive icons. The first is the iCloud drive icon in the top left highlighted in blue in the image below. Tapping this will open the document picker and edits in place in DTTG. Edits, highlights and annotations are saved in DTTG.
There is a second iCloud drive icon accessed through the large blue plus button on the bottom right. If you tap this then DTTG opens the document picker and imports the document. Edits and annotations are not saved back to DTTG this way.
Just to expand on what Readdle is doing here, the iCloud icon in the Sidebar is the PDF Expert/Documents by Readdle folder located on iCloud Drive. You cannot navigate to any other folders here-only the folder’s contents. The iCloud Drive icon located in the red titlebar lets you navigate all iCloud Drive folders, as well as document providers such as DEVONthink to Go, Dropbox, etc.
