Family sharing, separate database and DTTG vs server?

True, but I also try to make do with the tools I already have. But in this specific instance, DT is clearly not the best solution. Especially after I saw my spouse starting to hyperventilate as soon as I opened up DT with my plethora of databases ;-). We discussed things, and are settling on a family 1Password account for all our sensitive, essential documents. This way, we can even give our children and another (external family) member access to some of our essential documents. And DT will remain my own, highly personalized geeky playground ;-). Love the app for that!

+1 for this, it’s what we do. My wife is somewhat tech savvy, but I wouldn’t be able to convince her to use DTTG or DT for that matter. But having a shared iCloud folder works very well and I index into DT as you do. I haven’t explored a shared folder on the NAS, perhaps I should, however once you have something that works… getting my wife to change would be difficult though not impossible. She will with enough convincing… e.g. sharing photos via NAS, moving from 1Password to MacOS Passwords, etc., but not happy about it. :upside_down_face:

I have her using synology photos to backup, and shared Bitwarden (but I think Apple passwords is in my future), but synology drive she doesn’t use but when she clicks the link on calendar at least it loads it for her.

For documents for trips etc she will use the shared Apple note which works well enough.

Thinking about this today iCloud is probably an easier solution.

Do you put sensitive documents into iCloud? While I trust apple more than other cloud providers, I am always a bit concerned with sensitive documents in the cloud.

Yes I guess I do. Where do you draw the line though? You have to balance between no sharing and what that means, a do-it-yourself manner (e.g. NAS), a cloud solution (with encryption enabled), … It’s a balance between risk and convenience and overhead and worry. My personal sensitive information has been spilled by hacks to organizations at least 4 times that I know of (since they each contacted me to let me know). All of those “were protected” supposedly. None of it within my control. So yeah, we do.

Well I have a NAS with synology and the VON auto connects (even wife’s phone is setup) so it’s easy to connect, and don’t even need to use synology quick connect (which overall is pretty safe option). There is some data (aka taxes for example) I would never share on a cloud provider.

I think I’ll just live with my current mix of synology drive, DTTG for me, and probably paperless ngx for calendar links to family docs for now.

I hear you. fyi, I’ve been pretty happy using tailscale to create a private network between the family and devices. It was easier setting it up on the synology rather than all the router port forwarding/access, etc. Now for syncing I just give the tailscale “MagicDNS” address of the synology on our apps and make sure my wife uses the tailscale VPN for the synology photos app for example. That’s how I sync DEVONthink and DTTG as well (and Zotero, etc.). So, to your point, I could migrate all our shared files there similarly. Wish I’d thought of that first. Its just one more thing I’d need to do and migrate my wife’s use there.

I’m currently using Adguard dns re-writes to use named servers. I have adguard home re-write DNS (I own domain name), so synology.mydomain.com in my internal reverse proxy rewrites to the correct IP for example. Since this is a public domain it gets a real SSL cert, but only available locally. I then use wire guard to vpn in and dns still works, or for family I have a tailscale IP for my “reverse proxy on tailnet.” This means that when family logs into tailscale (or my wife when out of the house) and goes to synology.mydomain.com it still routes to correct site.

Edit: typo
