Feature Request: Use my ChatGPT subscription for built-in AI

Could DEVONthink support using my own ChatGPT subscription for its built-in AI? OpenAI now officially supports this in other apps, and it would help reduce extra API costs.

The MCP integration works very well for me, but some tasks are still better handled by DEVONthink’s built-in AI. Being able to use my existing subscription there would be very helpful.

Thanks for the suggestion, we might consider this for future releases. Personally I don’t think that this will last as it’s a great possibility to burn money at an even higher rate. Or the subscriptions would have to become significantly more expensive.

Claude helped me build a Python app that lets me access Claude Code via an OpenAI compatible API. Thus it works with Devonthink’s OpenAI compatible endpoint feature.

You could probably do something similar with ChatGPT and Codex with a prompt similar to this

I want to use my ChatGPT/Codex subscription as DEVONthink’s AI. Build me a small, zero-dependency Python program (standard library only) that runs a local web server on http://localhost:4891 and implements the OpenAI-compatible API — /v1/models and /v1/chat/completions — so I can select “OpenAI-compatible” in DEVONthink and point it there.

For each incoming chat request, take the user’s messages and run OpenAI Codex in headless/non-interactive mode (the codex command, using my existing Codex login) to generate the answer, then return it in the exact JSON shape OpenAI’s API returns so DEVONthink accepts it. Advertise at least one model in /v1/models, and accept any dummy API key since it’s local.

Then set it to start automatically at login (a macOS launchd LaunchAgent that keeps it alive and restarts it if it stops), with logs to a file.

Finally, give me simple, numbered, non-technical instructions to save and start it, confirm it’s running, and the exact DEVONthink settings (Settings → AI → OpenAI-compatible, URL http://localhost:4891, a dummy key, the model to choose) — plain language, plus how to stop or restart it.

Thank you for considering this!

Wow, thanks so much! You even wrote out the whole prompt for me! I’m not very technical, so I honestly hadn’t thought of asking AI to build something like this. Funny how, with AI, the hard part is sometimes just imagining what you could ask it to do. I’m trying this out now!
