Folders in wrong places

Hello, all,

I’ve had a problem for some time that I’d really like to solve once and for all: The folders hierarchy in one of my databases is not consistent across devices.

I do not mean the sort order. I know that is unique to each computer. I mean the folders themselves. As in, folders that I have placed in one spot on one computer, show up in an entirely different spot on another synced computer.

See screenshots below.

Other details:

  • I am syncing through Dropbox. Items are being brought over successfully – they’re just being put in the wrong places.
  • Yes, I’ve done all the fixit-type options (verify/repair, check integrity, optimize, etc.) on the database. No issues.
  • I have deleted the database from the other computer and then brought it back in. The problem replicates.

Any thoughts, please? I’m starting to get concerned – this database represents more than 20 years of scholarship, so I’m a bit hyper-vigilant about reliability. (Yes, I’ve backed up.)

Computer A (this one is the ‘original’ and correct):

Computer B (those additional folders are elsewhere on Computer A):

Brought it back in via what mechanism?

Added it back via settings. I’m sorry, but I didn’t keep track beyond that.

I can do it again and give the exact steps.

  • Are you referring to reimporting via sync?
    • If so, by what method?
    • And are you syncing this database with another device that has this database intact and the groups in order?

Yes, reimporting via sync would be much more accurate terminology. I’m using the Dropbox option (assuming that’s what you mean by method).

Both desktop Macs I’m syncing to show this problem, but, with different outcomes (as in, the incorrectly placed folders on Computer B are different than Computer C).

I also have an iPad syncing. It shows up correctly (i.e., matching Computer A) there.

Here’s a screenshot of the third computer:

Hold the Option key and choose Help > Report bug to start a support ticket from one of the problematic Macs.

Will do. Thanks!
