No, this depends on the smart group and its conditions. Only in case of conditions which can be evaluated very fast the number is always displayed, otherwise after selecting the smart group.

Not sure if this is simple or complicated condition.
Slow conditions are especially those using all/content search queries or fuzzy queries. Therefore in this case it’s a slow one.
