hardwiring of titles and filenames of indexed files

Dear devonians, you might want to be aware of this discussion in the Sente forums: sente.tenderapp.com/discussions … en-sort-of

There might be quite a few DT+Sente users out there who would prefer DT to stop messing around with filenames of indexed files when you just change the document title in DT.

I know, the Sente developers have kinda shot themselves in their feet. Problem is that it affects users, too. At present, DT seems to be the one and only player who could solve this issue. By cutting the hardwiring of titles and filenames of indexed files.

Thank you for the hint! It’s actually a requested feature that DEVONthink is automatically renaming files. And it’s a very useful one for simple file management as indexed files can be renamed, duplicated, deleted and comments can be added.

Maybe there will be an option to disable this but more likely is support for Sente in some other way.

I’d mentioned this earlier, I guess right after I could have a look at earlier betas of Sente back in May or so. Anyhow, you’ve been busy with more fundamental things in DT development, I guess. And DT has become so much more useful, faster, functional and, so far to a lesser extent though, visually pleasing than it was 12 months ago when you seeded the first beta. Your decision to distribute betas at an early stage was very smart.
Thinking a bit beyond the time when tagging will be fully implemented and the GUI is slightly more polished, you might indeed consider to turn DT into an really indispensable tool for academics, the hub for doing research. What DT here still lacks is tight (!) integration with bibliographic software with round-trip data exchange and mutual awareness between DT and a bibliographic software. I would regard this omission as the obstacle in academics’ software-based working processes. For its lack of proper AppleScript support, Sente might not be the best software to start with from your perspective. As a Sente user and Endnote sceptic, I hate to admit that Endnote might be better suited (it seems to have a decent Applescript API) for a showcase to integrate DT with bibliographic software and how to turn DT into a real hub for academic work. I guess there will be some integrating attempts for later DT versions. However, I think greater value for users would come from direct cooperation between devontech and bibliography software vendors. I don’t know whether it fits to your and others strategic interests and the specific economics of software development, but users would benefit greatly.

Thank you for your thoughts on Sente and DEVONthink. We are, actually, already in contact with Michael from Third Street Software and have spoken about how to solve this very problem. You will soon see the results from these talks.

Good to hear that. I’m very curious.

Dear Eric Boehnisch,

you wrote on Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:58 pm, that you got into contact with Sente’s Michael and that we would soon see the results from these talks. Could you give us an update please?
