Morning Y’all - I am such a luddite, and I am so sorry if this is listed somewhere and I am such a bonehead that I don’t understand despite doing my best to figure this out.
But in DT4 (which I just installed) AI is grayed out. When I read the literature, though, it says that you don’t have to use API b/c AI is working in the background.
Can someone please explain this like I am 5? I feel a uncomfortable shelling out an extra $15 for the handbook after purchasing the upgrade, but I will eventually.

I’m not sure where you’re reading this but there are two forms of AI in DEVONthink:
- Internal AI: our proprietary AI engine, in place for almost a quarter of a century that enhances search, aids in filing, helps locate related documents, etc.
- External AI: This is access to AI like ChatGPT, etc., in certain facets of the application.
These are not the same thing and have complementary roles.
External AI also requires obtaining an API key from a commercial AI provider. And yes, giving them some money to use their services.
