Highlighting or annotating pdfs results in Chinese garbled code problems

Two different manipulations of PDF lead to different results:

Method 1:
If I use Open Adobe to annotate and highlight PDF.
Results:
(1) Highlighting and annotations are normal.
(2) I can copy and paste the Chinese inside the PDF normally and without garbled code.

Method 2:
Highlight or annotate operations directly in Devonthink.
Results:
(1) Highlighting and annotations show garbled code.
(2) Copy the Chinese inside the PDF, and paste it out will be garbled.

Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? Thank you for your help. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

This is an issue of the PDFkit framework of macOS which we’ve actually reported multiple times to Apple. The only workaround right now is to annotate/edit such PDF documents using third-party apps which are not using this framework (e.g. Adobe).

Okay, I get it. Thank you for your quick reply.

I ran into the same problem, but from what I’ve seen, making highlights with the preview. app doesn’t result in garbled PDF text. This is strange, is this because preview don’t use the PDFkit that comes with mac? Or is there a problem with some other setup? Thank you in advance.

Most likely Preview uses APIs which are not available for third-party developers.
