How are exports sorted?

I posted this message earlier:

I’m hoping someone can help me with this. I organize my notes using groups and subgroups. I’ve set them to “unsorted” so that I can arrange the groups and notes in the order I want them in. However, when I export my note structure (to RTF), the groups/subgroups do NOT appear in the order that I arranged them. I cannot figure out how to get them to export in the exact same order that I’m currently viewing them. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? Thanks!

I haven’t received any responses yet so I thought I would ask this:

Can someone explain how your notes are sorted when you export them (to RTF)? Maybe that will help me with my problem. Thanks…

The commands File > Export > as Rich Text (RTF/RTFD) should export the current selection of the frontmost window in the visible order. Children of groups in the selection should use the natural order (“unsorted”).

In case that’s not what you’re experiencing, please post a screenshot. Thanks!

As Christian noted, the script will export selected items in the order in which they are sorted in DEVONthink.

But that doesn’t mean that the Finder won’t sort them differently when you look at them in the Finder, e.g., within a folder that holds the exported files.

If you wish to have the segments of a project containing RTF documents retain a desired order, one alternative would be to use the Merge command to place them in order within a single RTF document.

Thanks for the reply! I should clarify, all of the notes are exported in the order I view them on the screen–WITHIN their respective groups. It is the groups that are exported in a different order than the order I view them in DT. I attached screenshots of the group structure in DT and what the structure looks like after its been exported. Here is the group structure in DT:

Here is the order the groups are exported:

As you can see, upon export the sub-groups under Apologetics incorrectly appear under Animals, and the sub-group Worldview-Alternatives appears under Catholicism instead of under the parent group Worldview. This is the problem.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
