How do I move DTPO database from root directory to Documents

When I installed DTPO I acceded to DevonTechnologies strong recommendation of placing my database within a “databases” folder within the main user account in the… what, Root Directory [?] so that it would not be subject to iCloud sync. Evidently, iCloud syncing was known to create problems.

Now, DevonTechnologies is recommending iCloud sync. (See, for example, the recent Devonian Times article “DEVONthink adds iCloud sync”. Seems like a good idea.

Question is: How do I move my DTPO database into the Documents folder (where iCloud will see it and sync it) without losing the links that make DTPO work or otherwise breaking it?

Just to be clear: We don’t suggest putting a database in “the Root directory”. We advocate putting it in the Home directory (or the root of the Home directory). This would be a folder like, /Users/sandcarver/Databases.

That is not what we are advocating and you still should not do it.
You should leave your databases where they are and look into DEVONthink’s Preferences > Sync.

On the Mac…

  1. In DEVONthink’s Preferences > Sync, enable the iCloud sync location.
  2. Enter an optional encryption key, if desired.
You will use this same key on other devices running DEVONthink or DEVONthink To Go, syncing with this sync location.
Note: If this is a second Mac connecting to an active sync location. In that case, you’d need to enter the password you initially specified.
Also, You cannot add / modify / or remove the encryption key later, unless you clean the sync location first, so it’s best to decide and specify it when you first enable the sync location.
  3. Check the checkboxes next to databases you want to sync.
Note: DTSync is done locally. After sync is finished, iCloud uploads to Apple’s servers, then to devices using your Apple ID. This means databases may not be immediately available to sync on the other devices. The initial sync requires patience, as we have no control over the speed and reliability of iCloud’s process.

On the mobile device…

  1. Go into DEVONthink To Go’s Settings > Sync: Edit Locations and touch the iCloud location.
    Enter an optional encryption key.
  2. If you already set up the sync location on another device, you must use the same encryption key you originally specified. If you didn’t specify an encryption key, you must leave it blank.
  3. Touch the sync location and flip the switch next to databases that are available to import.

Thank you, Mr. Neumann. That clarifies everything. Greatly appreciated!

You’re very welcome. Cheers!
