Do you never need to close the apps, or put a project aside to work on something else, and then come back to the first project days, weeks, or months later?

No. Of course I do that. I have a number of near, medium, and far term projects underway. All in varying degrees of attracting my attention. All “older” projects easily found in both Scrivener and DEVONthink. More “fluid” in DEVONthink as due to the “pause in work”, when the project is re-visited more references usually pop-up in the smart groups or new searches. Then my work begins.
