How to customize Lists / Outline numbering?

Native OS X list numbering leaves much to be desired. Is there a way to override and save custom outlining formats? I like taking notes with DT, but often times this needs to be in an outline format. I can alter a singe outline, but cannot save the structure (e.g. I. A. 1. a. i.) in order to use in a new text file. Ideas?

DEVONthink is using the standard outline/list handling of (Snow) Leopard, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a way to add favorites.

Therefore the only workaround is probably to save a template (via File > Export > as Template…) which is already using the desired format and afterwards to create new texts using this template.
