How to search for this... in DT3

I have populated a custom meta data field partially for files within an index folder and would like to filter out the items that I haven’t. One obvious way is to display the custom field as column and sort it.

Assuming the name of the custom field is mdField, how to do it in search for “mdField is empty”?

That isn’t possible as there’s no empty state for smart criteria.
