How to select text for copy?

I’m not trying to highlight anything. I just want to select some text on iOS so I can copy it. Long press just brings up a magnifying glass. If the choice pops up, I click select. It only selects 1 word or sometimes does nothing.

Plain text or rtf. Just select the text, not highlight it. Seems to be impossible.

Does this happen only for RTFs but really also plain text? These are two different editors and there is a problem with selecting text in RTFs and formatted notes on iOS 13.
