I am experimenting whether I can use DT4 to index my property database of approximately 380,000 pdfss. (after I’ve deleted duplicates I would expect the result to be approximately 100,000 pdf)). I have the indexing going on currently and expect it will take several hours.
My question is whether DT4 is able to handle approximately 380,000 files to begin with or my experiment is going to.be a waste of time. Of course if that question isn’t answered today then I’ll have found out for myself.
Also while a folder is being indexed, is it safe to change anything in the source folder at the same time or best to wait until the indexing is completed and update afterwards?

Did you add all of them at once?
The comfortable limit on a modern Mac is 250,000 items.

I wouldn’t mess about in it while the items are being indexed into the database. However, I also wouldn’t have added the entire 380,000 documents at once either.
Thank you. the few I did were very successful / useful so I’ve deleted the database and shall create a new one for index after i’ve deleted the duplicates.
You’re welcome!
Note the comfortable maximum can be exceeded provided the hardware could support it, but we cite our limits based on typical Macs with a maximum of 16GB RAM. That being said, I still would not try to index massive numbers of documents in one go. Just like the proverbial “eating of an elephant”, it’s best done one bite (byte? haha!) at a time
