Issue with Lost Files After Importing to Inbox

Hi all,

I’m experiencing an issue where the files in an folder I import into DEVONthink seem to disappear. I couldn’t find any similar cases on the forum, and I’m wondering if anybody else has run into this issue.

I regularly import files into DEVONthink using an Apple Shortcut, which moves them directly to the DEVONthink Inbox in Finder. This process usually works well.

Recently, I created a folder named "OmniFocus 240128” and added several files to it on my desktop (including a database backup file… luckily I double backed it up.

Using my usual process, I imported this folder into DEVONthink’s Inbox. However, upon checking DEVONthink, the folder appears empty and grayed out, indicating no files inside.

Troubleshooting:

  • I’ve conducted global searches in DEVONthink, including searching by file names, tags, and using partial names with asterisks.
  • Checked both DEVONthink and Finder trash bins – nothing from today found.
  • The files are not in any hidden files or alternate locations in Finder.
  • No relevant errors in DEVONthink’s Log.

Questions:

  • Has anyone experienced similar issues with files disappearing post-import?
  • Could importing to the Inbox (via Finder) instead of directly into DEVONthink’s main window be causing this?
  • Any suggestions on alternative methods to locate these missing files or prevent this issue in the future?
  • Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m eager to make DEVONthink a central part of my workflow, but issues like this are concerning.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best,

  • Jeff

Out of the box, no.

I’m eager to make DEVONthink a central part of my workflow, but issues like this are concerning…

I’m not sure why you’re coming to the conclusion it’s a DEVONthink issue at this point when you said, "This process usually works well. Recently, I created a folder named “OmniFocus 240128” and…” I’d be more concerned if you hadn’t made any changes.

What’s your shortcut and why are you using it to put things in the Global Inbox?

The inbox folder is actually only recommended for saving (see description in DEVONthink 3 > Install Add-ons…) but not for usually slow operations like downloading, scanning or copying lots of items to it as it’s unclear when exactly the process will be complete (although DEVONthink already uses a timer to avoid this problem as much as possible).

However, this doesn’t explain the above issue, are you able to reproduce it?
