Left sidebar sometimes gets blank and unresponsive

Since I upgraded to DEVONthink Pro 3.5 lately, I rather often face the problem that after some time of using DTP3 the left sidebar turns blank:

I can still click on the little buttons above the side bar to access the reading list etc., but it only switches one time to the reading list and even when I switch back to the list of databases, the sidebar simply stays blank (look at active button on top and compare to the content of the sidebar!):

The problem is recurring and to my experience does not depend on:

  • number of databases open
  • size of currently active database (in use on the second to left pane)
  • age, that is creation date, of the database
  • databases are verified okay

Factors probably contributing to the likelyhood that the problem turns up:

  • large tree structure with open disclosure triangles in the second to left pane
  • switching between documents (small text and rtf files) and making many small edits
  • having one large database open, even if I do not actively “use” it during that particular session

The only solution to get back to the list of databases for me is quitting and restarting DTP3.

Can you clarify what you mean by ”large tree structure”?

In the second to left pane where you have nested groups (subgroups, subsubgroups and so on), each with files beneath them, with several hundred of groups, a couple of dozens of groups opened, deepest level is 7th level from top group, each group has from 1 to a couple of hundred files in it.

For example working with the following database is likely to provoke the issue sooner:

but I was able to melt it down to a much simpler database from which the screenshot of my first post was taken, without having used the larger database mentioned above. Stats from smaller database:

With this database it took longer for the problem to occur.
Have already filed a bug report while the problem was visible (#928873).
