Hello. Is there a way to create a link to a folder, such that the folder is opened showing what is inside, even if it is empty. At the moment, when I create a link to a folder, it highlights that folder in the document list. I don’t want to reveal it but to actually open it. For example, to click on a link that takes me into the Inbox even if there are no documents in there.
I tried searching the documentation and forums but was unsuccessful. Apologies if I’ve missed something obvious. Many thanks.
Do you mean a folder in finder or a group in DT or a finder folder that’s indexed in DT
If you add a bookmark to a group and select it, it treats that bookmark as if it is the group.
If you’re wanting to see the contents, there is a hidden preference you can enable: DisplayGroupsInPreviewPane. However, this will only show documents, not subgroups.
Many thanks to you both. I should have been clearer: I meant a group (rather than a ‘folder’, sorry) in DEVONthink.
@BLUEFROG , that is helpful, thank you! It gets me partly there at least. For one of my usages, this should suffice.
EDIT: I spoke a bit too soon. It seems it is restricted to showing the contents of the folder as icons in the preview pane (which is exactly the area the hidden feature promises!).
Since it is not possible to launch open a folder through use of link, perhaps I might put in a feature request? Many thanks.
What are you specifically trying to accomplish?
Links for navigating from outside of DEVONthink, or from inside of DEVONthink?
Clicking this item link from outside…
… opens the group like this:
Clicking it in a markdown document inside DEVONthink gives the icon view:
But if you right-click the link and choose “Open Link In DEVONthink 3”, you get the same result as clicking the link from outside DEVONthink.
You can also create a bookmark with an item link in the URL field. Double-clicking that works the same way for me (opens the group in a new window).

All this is without enabling “Double-click opens groups in a new window” in the preferences.
Thank you all. I have created a “dashboard” document from within DEVONthink. In this document, I place links to open up various other files and groups that are also within DT.
For example, I would like to have a link on this dashboard document that “launches” my database’s Inbox; another opens up the Tags group and immediately shows me all my tags; etc.
This is helpful on the Mac, when I am navigating largely through documents and links. But it is even of greater use on iOS, where navigating directly through links can sometimes be much faster than going through multiple layers of navigation.
I should add that the view I most use is List rather than Columns or as Icons.
Thank you, @troejgaard. What you describe as happening when clicking the item from outside of DT is what I was trying to achieve by clicking from within DT. I would like to see the documents of that group as a list.
But you are right about the right-click! Somehow I overlooked that. Thank you. On the Mac, the right-click should do me fine. And on iOS, though it would be nice to be able to just “launch” into another folder from a link, it is not that a large problem, with a touchscreen, to just press the inbox once taken there by the link.
Thank you, @chrillek, for the suggestion of using favorites. But in this use case, I was trying to open the folder from a “dashboard”, or “homepage”, document. In any case, I reckon the solutions above should be enough for now.
Many thanks to you all for such quick and helpful responses!
