Missing Data!? Documents scanned in since August have vanished

Using Devonthink 3.9.4, MacOS 13.6.1. Have been using DT for many years, linked to a Fujitsu Scan Snap scanner. I typically scan in a month or so of documents at at time, perhaps 20-30 documents. Last did this a few weeks ago. All scanned in successfully to my Global Inbox. A few weeks ago I then filed those documents in the appropriate folders in my database. I do this manually, as I find the automatic assignment works about 80%. All documents appeared to go in the correct folders, and I looked at 1 or 2 since. This past week, I went to search the database for a particular item, and found that everything I scanned in since July is not there! My 2023 folders are missing everything after about August. Searching by name finds nothing more recent! Yikes! I shed paper once I’ve scanned it. Yes, I back up my whole system using CCC, plus have a Time Machine backup and a Backblaze backup. I’m pretty paranoid! Where are all my missing documents, that I know made it into DT3 at one point, but are now nowhere to be found?

Not even in one of the backups from right after the scan?

I can’t help, but the next questions you’re going to be asked before anyone can troubleshoot are:

  • are your missing files imported or indexed?
  • have you looked in Finder to see if the files are on your Mac somewhere and not in DT?

As @chrillek is leading towards with their post above, if the files aren’t even in your post-scan backups then something went awry.

Did you already verify the database(s), see File > Verify & Repair Database? Did you check the Finder’s trash?

We have a winner! I did verify and repair the database without a solution. I then looked in the Finder trash. How the heck wdidindj up there? Absolutely no idea, but I’m now a relieved camper. Thanks for the help.

Are you importing or indexing the documents?

Were the items in a folder called “DEVONthink trash” in the Finder’s trash?
