Modifying View "as Columns" Display

On rare occasions, with some deep hierarchy stuff, I need to be able to see full names, and I can’t figure out a way to modify column width or eliminate unnecessary columns. Is there any way to do this?

An example of the confusion that restricted-width can produce:

Pull the separator between columns.
Double-tapping the separator line will expand the column to the width of the widest name.

I don’t have a single separator bar, have a “slider.” If I click it, single or double, it does nothing, or moves the slider down to where I clicked it. It never changes into a little drag “hand.”

On the 2nd and successive columns where there is no slider it also does nothing.

It’s on the right hand side…

I’ve been on Macs since 1992, so believe me when I say the cursor does turn into the expand icon you indicate, no matter how I jiggle or move it. It remains a regular old pointer. Is there a place to toggle this option off and on?

If scrollbars are always visible (see System Settings > Appearance) like on my Macs, then you could drag the little handle at the bottom of the column’s separator:

Holding the Option modifier key resizes all columns, double-clicking adapts the column to fit the widest content.

Yes, thank you! I’ve not run into this “standard” before. In almost all cases, even with the scroll bar, I’m able to get the expand icon anywhere on the column.

I note also that with the scroll bar present, both List and Icon views will display and “expand” pointer when Preview is set to Widescreen.
