More Random Tags

I find most things I stash in DEVONThink through a Mac screenshot (“save to inbox”) save with tags in my default Inbox. Sometimes many tags, and none are associated with the saved item. I took a screenshot two empty folders on the desktop and both came in with “internet site,” “site,” “web site,” and “website.” Additionally, one had “airport terminal.”

I then took a screenshot of a section of a DT display itself (Info > Generic > Tags), and it added “laundromat.” I took a screenshot of that screenshot tag and it labeled it with “motel.” I did it again and the resulting image got “airport terminal.”

I never want a tag applied to screenshot or copied text. How to shut this down?

Note: I make no use of RSS and conversion of hashtags is turned off.

Those aren’t the only options. Look at DEVONthink’s Settings > Files > Import > Tags and see what is enabled or not there.

Excellent! Thanks so much.

For passersby, here’s what I had selected. Once toggled, no more airports or laundromats.

While I’m here, can you tell me how to ensure that any bona fide “tags” (as opposed to comments, labels, et al) in a file will be imported or exported along with the items, but will not be generated or stripped out in the import/export process?

Or, of course, direct me to the place in the current manual where I can find this info?

Thanks again.

Why not just open the manual and take a look? If you look at the Table of Contents (or the outline embedded in the PDF), you quickly see Getting Started > Tagging. It sounds like it might be a good idea to read the whole section, but for this inquiry the particularly relevant subsections are Finder Tags and Tagging Sources (p. 16–17).

Finder Tags should automatically be imported and applied to exported files without any special setup required. (As long as you haven’t touched the hidden preference ‌DisableFinderTags, which I assume you have not.)

Do keep in mind that Finder Tags are not compatible with Linux and Windows filesystems – and be careful to research if they are compatible with any cloud services you use.

I have spent many hours in the manual “taking looks” and in the Take Control book on DEVONThink. I’m not manual averse, though I find the “search” process in Preview.app hobbled to say the least.

Thanks for pointing out relevant passages.
