More robust crash recovery? Run Sorter separately so DT databases are less prone to repair?

(Also sent to the “Contact Us” feedback@DEVONtechnologies.com email address)

Thanks for years of service, support, and improvements to your fantastic software. I really appreciate it. However:

Not for the first time, I woke my Mac to find it had restarted itself after some unspecified problem. I dutifully filled out the dialog to report the issue to Apple and then switched to DEVONthink Pro, which I have set as a login item and leave running because it’s the only way to keep the Sorter running for capturing new information throughout the day.

And not for the first time, I had to individually open each database, receive a message that it seemed to have been left open, and confirm for it to be reopened/repaired as I prayed I hadn’t lost anything.

Can this process be made more robust?

Thanks again.

If your machine crashes, applications have no chance to react. They just die with the OS.
If your machine crashes regularly, I suggest finding the cause of that.
I rarely experience macOS crashes, every two years or so.

Welcome @mjg

which I have set as a login item

We do not recommend launching a heavy application like DEVONthink at login. Small utilities, like our XMenu app, perhaps.

And not for the first time, I had to individually open each database, receive a message that it seemed to have been left open, and confirm for it to be reopened/repaired as I prayed I hadn’t lost anything.

There is nothing unusual here and of course it will report something untoward happened. Databases are verified on opening and issue would be reported. Check Window > Log for more information.

Can this process be made more robust?

In what way?

As suggested in the topic, provide a way to keep the Sorter menu item or palette available even if the main DEVONthink app isn’t running. That way, I don’t have to worry about keeping such a “heavy” application open all the time.

Not for the first time, I woke my Mac to find it had restarted itself after some unspecified problem.

Noted, but keeping the Sorter running outside DEVONthink doesn’t address this core issue. This is something you should be investigating.

I put stuff into the DEVONthink Global inbox, even when DEVONthink not running. True that I rely mostly on PDFs being put there, but putting other file types works. then when DEVONthink launches the files are imported.

Like @chrillek I do not see macOS crashes very often. Something odd going on.

I am, I’m just not reporting it here because it’s not about DEVONthink.

Please don’t chastise customers. It’s rude.

I don’t think I’ve seen a system crash on any of five Macs in 3+ years, including one from mid-2012.

I love love love the Global Inbox and the items in the Services menu. The Sorter also enables me to create quick notes (including voice, video, and screen captures!) without first creating a file in another app. And it’s not available unless DEVONthink is running.

Lately I see more and more system crashes on the iMac Pro & Mac Studio whereas the MacBook Air is rock solid. And the only additional hardware used by the desktop Macs are external discs but nothing that would require third-party drivers.

For the record, the DEVONthink app itself has crashed on me several times. I’ve dutifully selected “Report” before relaunching. I hope you’re able to investigate it. :unamused:

Pressing Report in Apple’s crash dialog does not send things to us.

In DEVONthink, hold the Option key and choose Help > Report bug to start a support ticket.

That could be better automated. For example, if any of Flexibits’ products crash, they display a dialog when next opened that enables reporting the problem to them.

Consider this another feature request if my original isn’t likely.

I suppose it’s possible to amend the current warning when opening a database post-crash/force quit but development would have to assess that.
