Move a database to an external drive

Anything I should do before I move a database to an external drive?
reason: I don’t use this database often, I may bring it back again in the future.

also what happens to tags of the database, where do they go after the database is no longer available?

Before moving the database, make sure it’s not open in Devonthink

The database data is contained in a name.dtBase2 file/package
and includes Tags information

See page 19 of the “DEVONthink Manual”, 3.9.7 version discussion creating “optimised and compressed copies of whole databases” which you can store anywhere you want that can store files.

PS. My experience is that external USB-connected drives fail more often than drives on computers and servers. I make sure I have backups of my USB drives. I prefer not to lose my only copy of files on those devices.

Thank you,
I wont be connecting this external drive to use the database. I’m moving it because I dot use it. if I need it later on I will move it back to my Mac,

Yes backup is a good idea too.

There are lots of other good ideas in the “DEVONthink Manual”.
