Openmeta and Tags within DTP 2.x

Yes, that’s a fact.

You’re absolutely right.

@radii0,

Thanks for the update and information.

@sjk,

Can you tell us generally what the issues are, that cause concern with OpenMeta? I mean just in a few words so those of us not following the discussion know how serious,& what is affected.

A significant issue is that OpenMeta proposes to use an area of OS X code that Apple “owns”, and Apple has stated that they do not support its use by others. In other words, Apple is under no obligation to maintain the usability for OpenMeta’s purposes. That introduces uncertainties for broad participation by developers in the OpenMeta project.

Thank you, Bill.

That sounds like a serious problem, until OM and Apple work it out.

Jon Gotow’s post in that OpenMeta discussion is probably the best summary of key issues and proposed solutions.

Jon Gotow is now in! He’s written an excellent follow-up piece.

As soon as that version hits I’m purchasing. The goal here is to create a unified tagging system that of course works across apps. Apple could and should develop a robust system of dealing with xattrs and embed it into their API but the only way we can speed that up is to show that there is demand for it.

Any Mac app that tags should be looking earnestly at OpenMeta as a way of preserving their end users work in tagging. In a few years perhaps there’s an Apple blessed solution and an easy OpenMeta export.
