Personal DT Irritation (sorry!)

So, first off, I have used DT for many years (since 2006!) and plan on using it for many years to come. It’s great app, and continues to impress me with its power. BUT, it does have a few things that bug me, and I did want to provide a bit of constructive criticism, in reference to the attached screenshot.

The screenshot shows my typical use, with my preferred column view as I have quite deeply nested tags/groups. I have an RTF file that I’m renaming, though that’s hard to see since DT scrolls the filename I’m editing off to the left (grrr). This makes editing filenames a chore, since I continually have to drag the column view around to pull the file I’m renaming into view (otherwise I’m typing blind into the filename!).

And this is what bugs me a bit: The filename scrolls off only so that DT can show (Finder-like) an additional column giving file details (center in the screenshot). But, in fact, this column is entirely redundant: the huge file icon is just window-dressing (why?), and the Generic Inspector window on the right contains the same information as the center column (and more besides). So, really, this middle column is redundant and wasting screen space (and a lot of it with that huge icon).

Now, I realize not everyone has the Generic Inspector window open all the time, but if, like me, they do, that center column is just getting in the way. I’ve found an option that hides it, but this seems to be per-group rather than a global on/off toggle. I realize the column view mimics Finder, but that center column just keeps getting in the way, and I’d love some way to just turn it off in the UI.

Meanwhile, here’s what I have to do all the time:

  1. Click on a file to rename. Watch it slide off to the left of the window to show the not-very-useful center column (grrrr).
  2. Swipe around to get the filename visible. Edit it.
  3. Click next file to rename. Roll my eyes as DT again hides the filename to show that wonderful center column again…
  4. etc…

So, would be great if there was a way to simply disable that “file detail” center column in Settings. Just saying

If you have the Inspector open, why not use it to rename the file?
