Prepend from AI Chat to open DT document

I have been using Ollama to summarize files in DEVONthink 4. Normally I save the AI summaries to the same group where the file is located. However, I have been told that it is possible to append (or prepend) the AI generated summary to the very document it has summarized. I would like to do that, but I cannot figure out how. Is this actually an option? If so, how is it done?

You need to provide more detail. There is no singular “document” in DEVONthink and you logically can’t modify files like Word, etc.

Thanks. That’s actually what I understood, but in the course of explaining how to save a summary of a file using AI chat within DEVONthink the chatbot described how, rather than saving the summary in the same group, it could be appended to the file just summarized. This was called “prepend.” I could see no way how to do this and, as you just said, it didn’t really make sense given the variety of files (pdf, Word, etc.). So I thought I would ask. I fairly often get misinformed or otherwise incorrect answers when I query ChatGPT about something. This is another example.

Depending on the used model and settings, AI is able to modify the selected document (only plain/rich text, Markdown, HTML, formatted notes), e.g. to insert, append or update text. But this is controlled via the prompt.

Ah, that explains it. I had misunderstood. I thought that “prepend” meant that you could somehow attach or link the AI summary to any kind of file. Many thanks.

If you use MCP tools you can use an AI Agent to modify a Word/RTF file. Or a safer alternative (which I do) is to instruct AI to duplicate the existing Word fie, save the original in a Temp AI folder, and then edit the duplicate as desired.

An annotation file attaches or links to another file, of any kind.

Oh, that’s great. I have now figured out how to have an AI summary saved as a “sidecar” annotation to a pdf. Exactly what I wanted.

Very easy to do! For my work, it makes DT even more valuable.

Glad to hear it! Many people find annotation files very useful.
