ProtonDrive as a cloud backup?

Hello,

I have a question about Proton Drive and whether it’s a sensible way to create one more place for my backups.
I already run two Time Machine backups—one local every hour and one off-site. I don’t yet have a cloud-based backup.
Could Proton Drive fill that gap, and are there drawbacks I might be overlooking (apart from the obvious fact that it’s cloud-based)?

Why are you posting this in the Devonthink discussion forum?

Pretty obvious. I’m talking about backups in a DEVONthink forum—i.e., DEVONthink backups.

Specifically, what software do you plan to use to do the backups to your Proton Drive? Do you intend to backup DEVONthink databases, or DEVONthink archives?

It would certainly be nice to have the databases there. Would that work?

Thanks for your time.

  1. Proton Drive is not a backup application. It’s a cloud service.
  2. You should never put your DEVONthink databases in any cloud-syned location or you could irreparably damage them.
  3. You could periodically use the File > Database Archive command to create a ZIP file of a database to be uploaded to the cloud service.

That answers my question and becomes a future solution that lets me use something I already pay for (ProtonDrive).
Thanks

I backup my Devonthink data both a local drive (TimeMachine), and offsite cloud service (Arq)
The backups are incremental
ProtonDrive isn’t a backup service, but can be used to store zipped archives of your Devonthink databases
