Prototypes/Templates for custom metadata?

Hi!

Is it possible to customize the metadata visible under “Information > Custom” differently depending on the type of document?

Scenario:

If I have a PDF of a book, I would like to have different metadata under “Information > Custom” than if I have a business letter as a document. For a book, for instance, I would want to capture an ISBN or an online link or similar. For a business letter, however, I would want to record different data, such as which employee wrote it, what the file number is, etc. If I have a scholarly article, I would again want to capture different metadata, like in which journal it was published, what the exact topic is, what type of article or study it is, and so forth.

I would like to use something like prototypes for this, e.g., a “Book” prototype with custom metadata (A, B, C), an “Article” prototype with metadata (D, E, F), and a “Business Letter” prototype with metadata (G, H, I), and so on. Those who use Tinderbox will know exactly what I mean. However, I would like to do this within DevonThink and not use Tinderbox for this task – for example, because I also want to work on this on my iPad while on the go.

Is something like this possible?

Thanks for your advice!

No, you can’t change the visible metadata based on any criteria: file type, location, etc. You can only enable of disable visibility globally in the Settings > Data.

Oh, that’s unfortunate. But thank you very much for the quick response! Is it planned for a future version?

You’re welcome
I can’t speak for development but it’s on our very long list of possibilities.
