Is it possible to re-order the smart groups in the main bar? Currently mine are arranged alphabetically but I would rather arrange them in a more logical manner.
No, it is not currently possible to do this.
Then I would like to officially add it as a feature request 
Essential IMHO if you are trying to organise a load of smart groups.
