Redirection of folders
1, I have a databases via ‘index’, the database file is in macbook, the indexed pdf file is in the removable drive disk01.
2, when I go out and don’t have disk1 with me:
2.1, I carry a removable hard disc disk02, this time I how to index the database and located on disk02 above the file associated. (Assuming that the contents of the indexed folder located on disk01 and a folder located on disk02 are basically the same)
2.2, Can I associate the index of the database with a folder in my personal nas. (Assuming that the contents of the indexed folder on disk01 and a folder on nas are basically the same)
It’s not clear to me what you want to achieve our what you mean by “associating the index of the database with…”
Perhaps you can describe your goal so that we can find a way to achieve it?
Words always confuse us, never more than a smile can do
I have a database, I imported a file called ‘DEVONthink3.pdf’ into the database using ‘index’. The pdf file is actually stored in a folder on a portable hard drive.
So there is an entry in the database that reads: DEVONthink3.
When I replaced another removable drive, there was also a folder containing ‘devonthik3.pdf’ on that drive. This time, when I choose to open the file ‘DEVONthink3’ in dt, the file is not found.
So at this point, I am able to make the database in the ‘DEVONthink3’ can be associated with the second mobile hard drive in the ‘DEVONthink3.pdf’, that is, you can open the pdf file through the database.
I don’t know if I’ve made myself clear this time, thank you!
Click on the file name in the database to open my pdf file via dt or other software.
Why dont you take disk 1 with you?
You’re very funny.
Suppose disk1 is lost or corrupted.
Then all my pdf files, in another folder on another drive.
This time click on the filename in the database, it would be best if I could open the files in the second hard drive.
Please, is there any solution for this situation?
I have a hard time understanding your issue, frankly. Without thinking too hard about this and maybe this not workable for you, use Disk1 all the time and take it with you. When at your HQ/Home, use Disk2 to store a backup of Disk1. Keep Disk2 at HQ/Home.
You definitely need a backup. If you’re taking disk 1 with you or not. You don’t believe that a disk will stay intact just because you don’t move it, do you?
And disk 2 can break, too.
Your best bet might be to index files on a cloud or NAS volume instead. Though that requires you having sufficiently fast and stable internet access wherever you go…
What you are describing is far too a fragile setup in my opinion. How to you ensure that disk 1 and 2 always have the same content with the same modifications, for example?
It’s not being funny. It’s a legitimate question.
You’re approaching this backwards and proposing an awkward and inefficient scenario.
- You shouldn’t index on disk1 then leave the house with disk2.
- You should index disk2 and take it with you.
- You should use disk1 (at home) as your backup.
jiyuan, I believe you need a solution for carrying your (indexed) data with you, but also making sure you always have a safety copy, right? BLUEFROG’s comments are exactly what you need, but let me add that the Devonthink manual is excellent, and it will clarify the many ways you can create backups and syncs, via Bonjour, NAS, etc. Take a few moments to check it out, you will enjoy it.
There’s a clear distinction between sync and backup that merits to be stressed.
