Search for items not in the current selection

I am organizing files that I have brought over from Evernote where they were not well-organized at all.

So, I want to search for files that are not in the current selection. (The current selection being the group where these files would belong. The more files I put in the correct place, the more my search results are filled with files I am no longer looking for.)

I would have expected scope:!selection to do this, but it does not seem to.

I am fairly new to using DT search prefixes and operators, but I believe the syntax is correct.

Am I getting the syntax wrong or is this not expected to work?

Scopes don’t support conditions like this. One possibility might be to (temporarily) exclude all groups containing already properly filed items from searching. See Info > Generic inspector
