Is it possible to select an area (e.g. inside a PDF file) and capture it as a screen shot?

No but you can take a normal screen capture, crop it, then share it to DEVONthink To Go.

Tedious if this is part of a workflow where many files and snapshots are involved. Any other thoughts?

This would be awesome. Goodnotes has this feature but that app is a very different beast, of course
